David: Question: What causes some maple to look like marble?
(a) Fungus
(b) Minerals
(c) Bacteria

Answer:
(b) Fungus
Some maple boards have irregular black lines and different-colored areas that make the wood look like stone. Both effects are the result of various colonies of fungus attacking the wood after it has been cut, but before it has been fully dried.
