This Old House - Episode #3401
In celebration of 35 years of This Old House, this season begins in Boston's oldest neighborhood: Charlestown. Our new project is part of a cluster of 1850s-era Greek Revival houses tucked into the backside of Bunker Hill. Homeowner Angela Daigle loves the period feel and features of her home, but wants to update its run-down details. Master Carpenter Norm Abram and General Contractor Tom Silva begin demo on the first floor, as downstairs, Host Kevin O'Connor, Plumbing and Heating Expert Richard Trethewey and mason Mark McCullough start digging into the project.

Ask This Old House - Episode #1301

The thirteenth season of Ask This Old House begins with Plumbing and Heating Expert Richard Trethewey showing Host Kevin O'Connor some solutions for dealing with rust staining. General Contractor Tom Silva opens up a small home by installing a pass through in a load-bearing wall. Landscape Contractor Roger Cook replaces a poorly built fence gate with one that will last. And the guys play "What Is It" with special guest NASA Astronaut Rick Mastracchio.

Rust Stain Solutions
Richard shows some solutions for dealing with rust staining.

Where to find it?
Richard explains that rust staining is caused by high iron content in water and while it doesn't pose a health risk, it is unsightly.

Richard recommends you use a combination of vinegar and bleach to remove rust stains in bathtubs and other plumbing fixtures.

To prevent rust, Richard recommends installing a whole-house water filtration system with a sediment filter designed to remove iron. These are available to purchase at a local home center.

Installing a Pass Through
Tom opens up a small home by installing a pass through in a load-bearing wall.

Where to find it?
Tom uses kiln-dried lumber and plywood to frame the pass through, which is available to buy at from lumber yards and home centers.
Tom also shares some tips for identifying a load-bearing wall, but ultimately cautions that a structural engineer is the best person to consult.

What Is It?
The guys play "What Is It" with special guest NASA Astronaut Rick Mastracchio.

Where to find it?
Special guest, NASA Astronaut Rick Mastracchio demonstrates how to properly use a NASA Body Restraint Tether (BRT) while aboard the International Space Station. More information on the BRT can be found here.

Replace Fence Gate
Roger replaces a poorly built fence gate with one that will last.

Where to find it?
For a custom opening like this, a fence contractor could fabricate a custom gate to fit your opening.
