Question For Norm

David: Question: I built the Aidirondack Chair and Love Seat and have had them out in the weather for a few months unfinished. I am dissapointed in the Cypress because as it ages it is showing longitudinal grain cracks that were not visible before. Is this normal for unfinished Cypress? Would mahoganey be a better choice? You mentioned in one show that they cost approximately the same. What is your current view on finishing these woods for outdoor use? I have been watching for years and you have changed your mind from time to time after trying new finishes. I thought the last thing you said was you would leave them natural, at least for Cypress. Thanks,Garner Potter

Answer: We have cypress adirondacks standing outside unfinished since they were built built 20 years ago. No checks or problems although lichens fasten themselves to the wood. More recently we used some decking mahogany for some chairs and are well pleased with the results. It is heavier than the cypress which causes a minor problem. We have taken the precaution of applying Australian timber oil (Cabots) to keep them from drying out and checking.
