This Old House - Episode #3316
Paint color consultant Bonnie Krims explores some historically informed options for the exterior of our Italianate style home, while Master Carpenter Norm Abram and General Contractor Tom Silva patch in the holes in the old oak veneer floors left from moving around walls and duct openings. Plumbing and Heating Expert Richard Trethewey presents a solution to the ugly PVC intake and exhaust pipes that come out of a typical boiler. Today, because we are installing a new, more efficient boiler, we can use a smaller, flexible exhaust pipe in the old chimney that has a smart-looking integrated cap, allowing us to use the chimney itself for the fresh air intake. Host Kevin O'Connor meets interior designer Christine Tuttle at an 1870 Italianate style home in Dedham, Massachusetts, to see how work she recently completed there echoes what we might do at our house. Back in Arlington, Tom oversees an army of subs working to finish up the roughs so he can insulate, and upstairs, he shows Kevin the places where he likes to see radiant heat used the most: exterior walls, bathroom floors, the shower walls, and even within the shower bench seat

Taking Out the Dip
I knew something was on Tom Silva's mind. We were about a month into the project and he was quiet. Perhaps even moody.

"What's up Tom?"

"That dip in the floor is bugging me."

I couldn't get much more out of him that day, but I knew he had an itch to scratch. About a week later I visited the site and saw how Tom scratches this kind of itch.

Alabama Clawfoot Tub & Shower
Richard visits a historic home in Mobile, Alabama and installs a clawfoot tub with shower.

Where to find it?
All clawfoot tub bath and shower accessories, including the supply and drain lines, the fill valve, the shower head, and the curtain rod were manufactured by Sign of the Crab.

Expert assistance with this project was provided by Britannia Plumbing of Mobile, Alabama. They can be reached at 251-447-2266.

The horse-drawn carriage on which Richard arrives was provided by Bienville Carriage.

Ask Roger: Three-Cut Pruning
Roger shows the proper way to prune a tree using the three-cut method.

Where to find it?
The three-cut pruning method will prevent the weight of a branch from ripping the bark.

A hand-pruning saw can be purchased at a home center or garden center.

What Is It?
Kevin shows a long black fabric and the guys try to guess its intended use.

Where to find it?
The Quick Dam is a flood barrier. The fabric bag is filled with polymer that absorbs water and expands to many times its size. It can then be used as a sandbag to divert groundwater. It is manufactured by Absorbent Specialty Products.
