Ask This Old House - Episode #1303
Landscape Contractor Roger Cook educates Host Kevin O'Connor on beneficial insects. General Contractor Tom Silva resizes a front door that gets stuck on carpet every time it opens. Plumbing and Heating Expert Richard Trethewey repairs an outdoor garden faucet. And the guys ask "What Is It?"

Beneficial Insects
Roger educates Kevin on beneficial insects.

Roger shows Kevin a shrub that is being eaten by aphids. The shrub also has large, orange bugs on it, which Roger identifies as ladybug larvae. The ladybugs are attracted to the aphids and will feed on them, controlling their population, and limiting the damage they can do to the plant. Roger's advice was to let nature take its course and not to spray pesticides.

If you have aphids, ladybugs can be ordered through garden centers and online resources.
