Landscape contractor Roger Cook helps a homeowner install a bluestone patio in an urban backyard. Then, Roger, along with host Kevin O'Connor, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, and general contractor Tom Silva ask “What Is It?" Afterward, Tom helps a homeowner and her daughter hang their bikes in a small garage.



Installing a Bluestone Patio
Roger helps a homeowner install a bluestone patio in an urban backyard.

The bluestone that Roger used for this project was natural cleft bluestone in 18"x24" and 24"x36" pieces. The bluestone was purchased at Martignetti Enterprises.

For the base material, Roger used “pack" or “graded base," which is a mixture of ¾" stone and stone dust. For the setting bed, he used a mix of nine parts stone dust to one part portland cement. To lock the stones together, he used Polymeric Sand. Pack, stone dust, portland cement, and Polymeric sand are available through a masonry supplier.

Roger used a gas-powered plate compacter to compact the base material. These can be rented from a tool rental store.
